We undertook a strategic assessment of Errigal, Donegal's highest and most popular peak to develop proposals for sustainable management of access to the mountain.

This work involved:

  • site survey - mapping the condition of the routes and zones of damage caused by recreation.
  • stakeholder engagement - working with land managers (shareholders on the mountain's commonage and individual landowners), the local community, recreational interests and statutory bodies.
  • options appraisal - determining different potential routes and repair solutions
  • reporting - producing prioritised recommendations for action based on the best options.

Following the acceptance of the recommendations by the Stakeholder Committee, Donegal County Council submitted a funding bid to the European Union's Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme to take forward planning and capacity building. The successful bid became the ASCENT project.
